During BMW tenure in Formula I, their engineers, mainly
Baron von Falkenhausen, were able to take a factory production block (usually a used one being “seasoned”), originally made for their first modern four cylinder engine used in the 1500 Neue Klasse of 1961, and bring the 75hp block up to 1500hp with turbocharging. It was the first modern racing engine to produce 1hp per cc and Gerhard Berger holds the record for the fastest speed ever in Formula One – 218mph/350km! Yes, I know Honda has reached 265mph, but that was not in a race, it was at Bonneville, U.S.A.

Nelson Piquet won an F1 championship with this engine in 1983.
