Photography Friday – MAYbe some Mountains?Photography Friday – MAYbe some Mountains?

As the mountain pass touge saison is now definitely in full swing also for non scooby-drivers, I would like to show you my pictures from the epic roadtrip fellow photographer and good friend Alok Paleri an I did as far back as last summer. As the recent weather around here has been much more like summer than spring these pictures fit even better!

that’s the kind of scenery we spent two days driving around in..

Originally, the main motivation for the trip (besides it being totally awesome anyway) was for Alok to do a Speedhunters report for their driving month. Unfortunately, that report barely missed making it into driving month but has now been released in three parts: Part I, Part II, Part III.

right from the beginning there was a lot of shutter clicking going on

All we had planned was to do at least the Flüela/Ofenpass/Stelvio route completely, as it is probably my favourite route ever and I’ve driven it a lot of times. Also, it happened to be crowned „Best Driving Road“ by a small english TV show called „Pot Gear“ or something, you might have heard of it before.

on the „other“ side of the Flüela pass, the scooby’s in paradise!

What we agreed on from the beginning was to not make any more plans and not to look at the time at all but just to drive, stop and take pictures whenever we felt like it. This was Alok’s idea and it’s perfect for a trip like that. It was also a nice contrast to our usual deadline-covered and schedule-infested everyday lives. So we didn’t spend all our time driving but also took a lot of breaks, walking across a few rivers and stuff.

sometimes a good 2WD ..erm.. 2FD can be better than 4WD 😛

1 second after that pic he smashed that rock with his head, I swear!!

I don’t wanna do a full trip report here as you can find that on Speedhunters by Alok.. so I’m just gonna pick out a few more parts of the trip with the corresponding pictures.

to restrict oneself to the essentials can be the key to a good story.. 😛

So after driving around all day we were targeting to hit the top of the Stelvio Pass at dusk of the first day, as the very beginning and end of a day are the best times for photography. Alok got really cool shots up there which you should definitely check out on Speedhunters! 🙂 I didn’t really take pics up there, as I was mainly busy driving the awesome roads (thank god Alok didn’t have a driving licence back then so there were no awkward discussions in this direction 😛 ) but I did get this:

yeah that scooby again, I know… sorry, can’t stop. This is actually near the top of the Umbrail that leads you to the Stelvio comming from the Ofenpass

Of course we just had to leave a sticker on that Stelvio sign at the top! I hope it’s still there, would be AWESOME if someone spotted it and told me!!

The blast back to our flat we have up there in a town called Sent was awesome too, as I had all the roads to myself with noone else being out up there after it gest dark it seems. But soon the next day, the sun was out in full force again!

lots of funny effects that could be described by complicated formulae going on in this picture. Don’t care.

The large amount of sun energy even enabled Alok to levitate his camera!

One thing we did on day two was to cross THAT tunnel to get to Livigno, a small Italian town near the border which has the one remarkable feature of being completely tax-free. This weirdly enough caused me to buy a wide-angle Sigma lens as well as some other camera gear. While writing this I now just realized that I should go back there as the Euro’s now worth way less than last year! 🙂 Anyway, without too many more stories, here are a few more pictures I took at the lake of livigno, including the first tests of my new wide-angle, which has meanwhile become one of my favourite lenses:

nurburgring + mudflaps + prodrive wheels + gravel + hood scoop + tape = awesome mix of win!

wide angle testing, experimental phase..

The lake turned out to be a bit too cold to have a quick swim.

Alok getting another shot.

I couldn’t believe how wide that lense was! There’s a really cool picture of me taking a pic of the whole car while almost touching it on speedhunters.

After that episode, that also included some wannabe-rally gravel driving on my part for the camera, we hit the road again aiming for Zurich, but not without stopping a few more times on the Flüela we still had to cross to get even more pictures. Of course all I used was my new wide-angle. 🙂

That pic so totally sums up our trip. Awesomeness!!

So excuse me for warming up something a little older but maybe I’ve encouraged you to do a similar trip. In fact, what are you still contemplating, get out there this weekend, it’s totally awesome! I personally will definitely be up there a few times this summer again! Also, there’s are lots of plans for even more epic trips around, about which you’ll hear as soom as we’ve done them, of course! 🙂

As always, there are larger resolution and also a few more pictures available at www.silverpics.ch.
