Speed-Industries S13 challenging the quarter mileSpeed-Industries S13 challenging the quarter mile

Trying to think out of the box, test and love everything that is motorsport, we decided to compete at a totally different event with our RB-S13. The drift-spec Silvia is normally deeply involved in sideways action. As it is able to accelerate somewhat fast, it could be an interesting thing to challenge the quarter mile, we thought.

At the same weekend, the whole team was busy at the Wheelsfest in Lignières, I took the S13 to the Valais, where a local Scooby club was holding a motorsport event. Besides slalom racing and the usual bling-bling shows, there was also a nice little quarter mile challenge taking place.

Arriving there in the morning at about 09:00 AM, the ground was still wet from last night’s rain showers. Although the sky looked promising, still there was quite a bit of rain pouring down until about 12:00. As the 1/4-mile challenge was scheduled for the afternoon, there was a lot of time to be killed by trying to bring on the number stickers as properly as possible.

Ok now the Nissan was ready for battle, but still it was only morning… So I tried to have a look at the scene that was offered at the bling-bling corner. As you may have expected, the whole lot was more or less stuffed by scoobys from all generations and of all kinds and colours.

The location for this nice little motorsport event could not be beaten, the scenery was just stunning. The event took place on an old discarded military airbase in the middle of the Swiss Alps. There was a lot of space, although the ground was not too ideal for a car’s traction. It actually consisted of concrete slabs.

Dozens of different Subarus lined up one after another. Noticeably a large amount of new gens.

There was also a quite reasonable amount of pimped-out cars, which did not exactly meet my taste…

All in all it was an entertaining walk-through.

Finally after noon, the action seemed to get started. The ground was dry and the sun was shining hard. Prior to this, I did some test runs on an abandonned road next to the airfield, to get used to the clutch when launching hard. Althoug my setup was solid, with semi slick tires at the rear and a 90% LSD, the car struggled to get traction in first gear. I was not even thinking of trying to use the built-in launch control function of the Haltech ECU.

There was no training mode, it was just 6 runs, and the best out of them counted in the end. The car lineup was somewhat heterogene. With no engine capacity restrictions, turbo disadvantages or different classes, you could have everything next to you, from a FWD 1.4l VW Polo to a hilarious AWD Silverado 6.6l with 750hp. So it was a rookie approach, just for the fun of it.

The first two runs didn’t go so well, I just could not find the proper way to launch the car, without the rear tires going up in smoke or bogging like a grandma‘. The spraying of water to „heat“ (??) the tires did not help at all, in contrary.

Once I had the car moving in first and threw in 2nd I was able to literally smoke every opponent. But unfortunately, the first 100 meters are quite important. So I spent all of the 6 runs catching up the violently launching EVOs and STIs after the 1/8 mile. Luckily the powerband of the S13’s RB25 is somewhat wide, so I managed to overtake most of the cars in 3rd which was just right to exactly redline at the 1/4-mile mark. There was no trap speed provided, but 3rd gear is a solid 210 km/h at 8400rpm.

Although launching like a pussy, I was very confident, that I could be among the best 3 cars.

Wuheeeeeey…it was 2nd place for me! In the end it showed, that there was this mean Evo8 that beat me within 6 hundreths of a second. An amazing 3rd place for the SUV with 1600nm of torque! My time was a rather disappointing 13.35s. I had hoped to drop into the 12’s, but that must have been the receipt for grandma’s launching…

I wasn’t the overall winner, but at least the winner of hearts. Haha
Most of the time the crowd was cheering for the black S13 due to its mean exhaust note and the neverending rev-band 🙂
After the runs, there was a gathering of extremely curious folks, forcing me to pop the hood for a moment.

In the end, it was another, very different, podium place for a Speed-Industries car. Althoug it remains a drift car, I will come back next year, sporting an improved launch technique to see some solid 12’s!!
