Photography Friday – Vintage CivicPhotography Friday – Vintage Civic

A few days ago our team S13 driver Chris asked me if I would like to shoot his daily driver some day. Now maybe you would think a daily driver wouldn’t really warrant a photoshoot but Chris doesn’t have some boring station wagon or family car for a daily runabout but instead got himself this wonderful little Civic Mk2:

The main reason that triggered the desire for a photoshoot was the arrival of a set of 14×6.5 inch Watanabe RS wheels which suit the little Honda just perfectly.

The Mk2 Civic was built by Honda between 1979 and 1983, Chris‘ car is from 1982 and fitted with a 1.3L engine which develops a breezy 55 hp.

This number might barely seem noticeable next to Chris‘ other car, which has pretty much 10 times the power, but due to the Honda’s very low weight, it moves pretty well for what it is.

The engine is a 4 cylinder unit topped by a crossflow head with the gas mixing taken care of by a carburetor. Of course being from a time when noone really cared about what came out the back, there is no catalytic converter.

The transmission is a 5 speeder delivering the power to the front wheels. The suspension is actually pretty sophisticated with independent suspension back and front. Chris lowered the car somewhat with the addition of lowering springs.

The only other upgrade is the Nardi deep dish steering wheel.

Chris really made a lucky find with this little gem, as he purchased it from a 90 year old grandmother who barely ever used and certainly never abused it. Thanks to that the car looks as if it had come of the production line just 3 years ago instead of the pretty much 30 years it’s actually been.

There is absolutely no rust and the paint still looks amazing although the car has never been resprayed in its life.

But the 30 years of easy living are now over for the Civic, as Chris uses it to drive to his office every day, covering almost 2000km every month.

But beeing a Honda from the time when stuff was still constructed not to fail and not to fail right after the warranty runs out, I have a feeling that we will see this car in action for many years to come.

I don’t really know Chris‘ entire car history but what I know is that before he got the Civic, he owned a Audi S8 for a while. That might have been very comfy and all but its electronics kept going wrong and I heard stories about cambelt changes taking half a day. So after all, I think Chris is pretty happy with his trusty old Civic, the technology of which truly deserves the word „proven“.
