Meet Charlie Rhyu from TopSetupMeet Charlie Rhyu from TopSetup

We d like to introduce Charlie Rhyu the builder and driver of the famous TopSetup EG6. This car was featured a long time ago in „American Touge“ and defeated some really strong oponents with his setup. For thous who don’t know the car and don’t know „American Touge“ the following clip should give a nice introduction to the topic.

How did you get involved with cars?
When I was in my last year of high school one of my good friends was selling his 1991 Acura Integra GS. My parents paid for half of it and i paid the rest. It was the start. I wanted to lower it and make it sound loud.

The famous EG6 build by Charlie

What was your first car?
1986 Ford Mustang. Got if for $100 USD

What brought you to the Best Motoring event?
I was originally going to go to the JGTC event. JGTC came to the US for 1 year. All the GT500 and GT300 cars were there. It was the best car event I’ve ever been to. I also had some friends living in California that were going to local track events. So my main reason was to go to the tracks and road race then check out the JGTC event. A few days after the JGTC event. My friend told me about the Best Motoring event. We drove out there prepared to run with an extra set of tires, just in case. They denied us at first. But the Vishnu EVO blew a head gasket they asked me if they can use the EG for the shoot. I got pretty lucky that day.

Like all racing maniac – Charlie hangs out a lot on track with friends

What is your advice/experience for people who wan’t to build a simliar car?
Start with a clean base chassis. Try to stay away from the ones that are already modded unless you really trust the builder. Try to use as many parts from the Integra type R because they all bolt directly to the EG. Most important is track or seat time. Set the car up to your liking and comfort. If you go searching online for a setup it might not match your driving skill. So if you do get a clean civic just do your basic mods and go to the track and fine tune it. Pay attention to things like understeer and oversteer. In small amounts make changes to what needs to be corrected. Small adjustments make big differences in the EG6 chassis.

His current project

What is your current project?
A 1988 Honda CRX HF

Inside the car there is not much left of the original CRX – fortunatly

What is a project you want to do in the future?
I always have ideas in mind for the next project. For now I’m focusing on the CRX.

The little rocket is powered by a modified JDM K20a engine

Which is your favourite race track?
Currently I’d have to say Button Willow. Configuration CW#13. Its really fun. Going to Laguna Seca and Infineon raceway soooon. So this answer can change soon.

What race track would you like to drive on?
If I could pick and choose It would be a tie between Tsukuba and the Nurburgring. I dream to someday race my CRX on these tracks.

The Nordschleife – a track everyone would love to drive on!

Thank you Charlie for taking your time and answering all my questions! We wish you all the best in future and if you come to europe – just give us a call!
